Is cognitive value a necessary condition for a high degree of aesthetic value? To have cognitive value they say, an artwork must not only make new insights available, but also supply us with justification for those insights: after all, knowledge requires justification.(Young's Art and Knowledge)

In short an artwork, to be worthy of the name, must contribute to knowledge?

Illustrative representation, by providing us with an experience that resembles in certain ways the experience of the represented object, can present and demonstrate the correctness of a perspective on the represented object. On the other hand, Contemporary art, while it often shies away from illustration, makes extensive use of tools such as appropriation and contextualization that allow it to probe deeply into a wide variety of topics, including those most central to our understanding of the human condition.

To sum it up, this exhibit eliminates the term non-cognitive, because whether your creation imparts new insight or just an expression of oneself, it is no doubt worthy of the name ?art?. The vision is, ?Artists undivided by behaviors!? and the object is to eradicate the notion of ?high art? or ?low art?. Help spread the good news!

Ferdie Montemayor at the Kaida Gallery103 viewsFerdie Montemayor at the Kaida Gallery

Visual Artist Ferdie Montemayor presents his recent works on canvas in an exhibit entitled Home at the Kaida Gallery from November 18 to December 3. At the heart of Montemayor?s works is the dilemma of Filipinos who leave their homes and families in order to find more rewarding jobs abroad, even if their aspirations may sometimes border on the illusory. The predicament of material sufficiency and spiritual displacement is acutely rendered in Montemayor?s works. His paintings perform a remembrance that tries to capture all: pain and joy, harmony and dislocation, togetherness and distance.

Home includes large and medium scale works of city life and figures, painted in red tones and in black and white on acrylic and oil on canvases.

Montemayor studied painting from the University of the Philippines. He is a grand prize winner of the 1992 Metrobank Foundation National Painting Competition, recipient of the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1994 and an awardee for Metrobank ACES Awards for Continuing Excellence and Services in 2004.

Home opens on Nov. 18, 6pm Sunday. Kaida Gallery is located at the 2nd Floor GFO Building, 122 Kamuning Road, Diliman, Quezon City. For inquiries, please call 414-4777 or log on to www.kaidagallery.com

Imelda Cajipe-Endaya232 viewsHiraya Gallery goes into an introspective mood midyear with its upcoming
series entitled Saan Ka Nanggaling, Saan Ka Darating, successively featuring
the country's top printmakers: Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi
and Fil Delacruz.

Taking its cue from the visions of our national hero, Jose Rizal, in his
long essay, "The Philippines: A Century Hence," Hiraya offers its patrons
and visitors a varied but provocative look-and-see into the Filipinos'
responses to the events of the 20th century Philippines.

A very fevered soul in her sisterhood to the many Filipinas---of then, now
and the future---Imelda Cajipe-Endaya ignites a collage of thoughts about
their participatory role in the unfolding destiny of our nation. She
stationed herself near her photoengraving equipment like her old forbears
near their weaving looms and embroidery boxes chatting about the events of
the day and keeping track of everyone's whereabouts.

With time as her muse, Cajipe-Endaya treaded intuitively into the social and
historical circumstances that laid down the Filipinas' evolution in her
personality and disparate role among her ancestors, husbands, her mentors
and molders---that saw her as homely, a social catalyzer, and a deviant.

This retrospective exhibit of Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, an intense artist of
well-distilled intelligence, starts the visual series of pathways into the
past entitled Saan Ka Nanggaling, Saan Ka Darating. The show is open to the
public from August 19 to September 10.

THE ARTIST RECEPTION IS AT 6 pm, THURSDAY, AUGUST 19.

Hiraya Gallery is located at 530 U.N. Avenue, Ermita, Manila. For more
information, please tel/fax 523-3331 or email hiraya@info.com.ph or visit
